The foraging class at Hollow Spring Farm in Pell City, AL includes an informative two hour-long walk with Chris Bennett through the open fields, gardens, and wooded hollow that make up the 84-acre farm.
The purpose of the program is multifaceted; Chris’ goal is not only to teach and share information about what edibles are present in a particular season, but he also has a deeper purpose – to get people back to the seemingly simple act of foraging for food with the hope that as a result people will become more in tune with the seasons and inherently more mindful of where and how our food originates. As he leads a hunt for chickweed, virginia pine, or field garlic (just to name a few), he encourages people to open their eyes and be especially observant. He advises all to be “curious but cautious” and to do sufficient research to avoid potentially dangerous look-alikes, so for your safety it is best to learn about local foraging with an expert.
